Softball Practice Plans for Ages 7–8
Age-appropriate softball practices for 7–8 year olds (U8) — built to keep every kid active and having fun. Every player throwing, fielding, and hitting — all practice.
Seven and eight year olds can start to handle a real skill or two per practice, but fun still comes first. Keep drills short and disguised as games, give constant reps, and use small-sided play (like 3v3) so nobody's stuck watching. They're starting to grasp simple rules — introduce one idea at a time and repeat it, don't lecture.

Partner throwing so everyone's active, with a focus on grip, footwork, and hitting the target.
Ground balls and fly balls in small groups — glove work, footwork, and quick hands.
Tee and soft-toss stations for high-rep swings, with a simple cue per age.
Game-like baserunning and simple in-game decisions, taught through play.
Gear: Gloves, softballs, a tee, bats and helmets, and cones to set up stations.
A sample 7–8 softball practice plan
Here's a real 45-minute plan Coach Coach generated for a 7–8 softball team. Yours is customized to your kids and ready in under 30 seconds.
🏆 Softball Practice — Ages 7-8 — 45 min
⏱️ Warmup (10 min)
- Base Run and Freeze — Set up four bases in a diamond. Kids jog around the bases when you say "Go!" and freeze when you say "Stop!" Change direction each time you restart. It's a fun way to teach base running and listening skills.
🎯 Skill Work (20 min)
- Throwing and Catching Pairs (10 min) — Pair up the kids with soft balls. Stand about 5-10 feet apart and practice throwing and catching. Coaching cue: "Point your glove where you want the ball to go." Success is kids making accurate throws and catching with two hands.
- Ground Ball Relay (10 min) — Line up two teams, each with a cone about 15 feet away. Roll grounders to the first kid; they field and throw it back. Then they move to the back of the line. Coaching cue: "Get your glove all the way down to the ground." Success is fielding cleanly and quick throws back.
🏃 Game Time (10 min)
- Mini Softball Game — Set up a small diamond and play a mini game. Use a foam ball if needed. Rotate kids through batting and fielding positions. Keep teams small (3-4 per side) so everyone gets lots of action. Focus on hitting, running bases, and making plays.
🧊 Wrap Up (5 min)
- Team Cheer and High-Fives — Gather the kids in a circle and ask, "What's one fun thing you did today?" Quick group cheer and high-fives all around.
🎒 What to Bring
- 8 cones · 4 soft balls · 10 gloves (if available) · 4 bases or markers
- Set up a small diamond with bases for the mini game.
📋 Coach's Cheat Sheet
- "Point your glove where you want the ball to go."
- "Get your glove all the way down to the ground."

- Praise loudly: "Great hustle to get to the ball!"

What should a softball practice for 7–8 year olds look like?
Seven and eight year olds can start to handle a real skill or two per practice, but fun still comes first. Keep drills short and disguised as games, give constant reps, and use small-sided play (like 3v3) so nobody's stuck watching. They're starting to grasp simple rules — introduce one idea at a time and repeat it, don't lecture.
How do I run an efficient softball practice?
Use stations. Rotate small groups through hitting, fielding, and throwing so every player is busy and getting reps rather than waiting in line.
What should young softball players work on first?
Throwing and catching mechanics, then fielding ground balls and tee-based hitting. Keep groups small and reps high.
How long should a youth softball practice last?
60–75 minutes works well. Keep station rotations short for younger players and end with a fun, game-like challenge.
